Projects: Men's SS14 Line / Spartan Shoe / PSI+Flex V2 / Activity Sensor Concept

My Role: As a design intern, I helped the Quiksilver apparel and footwear teams finalize the Spring/ Summer 2014 collection by organizing color palettes, digital CAD files, product samples, and the lookbook catalog. Additionally, I worked for the DC Shoes footwear research and design team, as an industrial designer developing innovative wearable device concepts, creating footwear outsole prototypes, and submitting footwear tech packs.


Quiksilver Apparel & Footwear SS14

I worked on the Quiksilver Men's Spring/ Summer 2014 apparel, accessories, and footwear line as a soft goods designer during my internship experience and introduction into the action sports industry. The skills I developed included making tech packs, spec sheets, and organizing digital files into PDM. Further tasks included assembling color storyboards, organizing production matrices and VLPs, and organizing production samples.

DC Shoes Spartan Sport Low Kids

I worked on updating the upper proportion designs of DC Shoes SMU Spartan Sport Low kids shoe. Tools used included hand sketches, building tech packs, and reviewing samples resulting in the final youth blue sample below.


Proof of Concept

The task was to design with the team the second version of the PSI+Flex airbag for the next DC Shoes athletic training shoe. The airbag needed to be a full low profile airbag that provides cushioning from the heel to forefoot. After sketching out concepts, 3D CAD drawings were modeled using Rhino V5 and later fabricated into ceramic rapid prototypes for shape and performance examination. Various sizes and designs of airbags created using ZCorp 3D printer. The original black psi+flex trainer airbag on the far right, served as a base comparison to the prototype airbags whether cushion, support, and protection for the foot are adequate.


Skateboarding Wearable Tech

As part of DC Shoes Research & Development team, I worked on an ongoing confidential project developing an activity tracker sensor. The primary usage was for skateboarders to track their activities by placing the device in their shoes or eventually integrating it into other apparel items. My design assignment was to design the outer-case housing to shelter the internal components and design the user app interface for smartphones. Below are several concept examples I went through before developing a proof of concept with the lead senior designer and electrical engineers. The activity tracker featured shock resistance housing, 6-axis sensor, water-resistant, rechargeable battery, and wireless sync via Bluetooth.
